Understanding Your Data Sheet: Density & Specific Gravity

Posted by Natalie K. MacVarish on January 26, 2018

So you’ve narrowed down what material you need thanks to our “Learn More About your Plastic Sheet” series - now its time to download a data sheet and take a look at the performance attributes of our materials. But if you’re new to the industry, or don’t work in a technical role, the information stated on material data sheets can leave you more confused than when you started.

If you’ve ever felt this way after reviewing a material data sheet, then this next Impact Plastics Blog series focused on “Understanding your Data Sheet” is for you. In this next blog series we will explore ASTM tests commonly found on material data sheets for thermoplastic resins, starting with density and specific gravity. Continue reading to learn more!

The Difference Between Amorphous & Semi-crystalline Polymers

Posted by Natalie K. MacVarish on August 23, 2017

A defining characteristic that separates different thermoplastic polymers is whether they are considered amorphous or semi-crystalline. Popular thermoplastics used in the packaging industry such as HDPE and polypropylene, are classified as semi-crystalline, while others such as polystyrene and ABS, are considered amorphous. The main difference between these classes of thermoplastics are the arrangement of the molecular chains and how they, in turn, affect the behavior of the polymer under heat. Resin Price Volatility Leaves Buyers Uncertain

Posted by Natalie K. MacVarish on February 3, 2017

The start of 2017 was quite a shock for buyers in the plastics industry as price increases hit hard for several polymers. Prices surged in polystyrene and polypropylene within the span of days, with little to no notice and rumors of further increases on the horizon. Given the current volatility of the market there is a lot of uncertainty among buyers of resin and plastic sheet alike regarding whether they should stock up, or hold back.

To help give some context to the current pricing surge that many plastic sheet customers are seeing, and when you may expect some relief, below is a recap of market pricing reported for the month of January:

When it Comes to Material Selection Not All Plastics are Created Equal

Posted by Natalie K. MacVarish on January 27, 2017
Working in the plastic sheet extrusion industry gives you insight into the many ways plastic is used in modern society. But to someone who does not work in the industry, or is new to the industry, all plastics can look the same. However, not all plastics are created equal, and the term ‘plastics’ encompasses many different polymers all with different characteristics and typical uses.  At Impact Plastics, we extrude a mix of commodity & specialty thermoplastic resins for supply into various market verticals. New to plastics and don’t know where to start? Read on for a breakdown of the polymers that Impact carries and their typical uses.
